Understanding the PWN-Monochamus life cycle

An important part of managing the PWN problem is to understand clearly the relationships between the nematode, the insect vectors that carry it from tree to tree and, once the nematode reaches a tree, the interaction with it.

Understanding how the nematode survives and interacts with host trees in its native range and, critically, how this relationship changes when it interacts with host tree species that it has not co-evolved with is essential. The figure shows the complex relationships between PWN and its vectors in the beetle genus Monochamus and what the outcomes of nematode 'delivery' by the beetle to living or freshly dead trees are likely to be.
